? Uses of EDTA Cream in Dentistry
1. Chelating Agent (Dentin Softening)
EDTA binds calcium ions in dentin, which softens it and makes instrumentation easier. Helps in negotiating calcified or narrow canals.
2. Lubricant for Endodontic Files
Cream form (often mixed with urea peroxide or carbamide peroxide, e.g., RC-Prep, Glyde) acts as a lubricant for files, reducing friction during canal instrumentation.
3. Smear Layer Removal
When used as a solution (17% EDTA), it removes the inorganic portion of the smear layer on canal walls, improving penetration of irrigants (like sodium hypochlorite) and sealers. In cream form, it helps in partial smear layer removal during instrumentation.
4. Facilitates Irrigant Action
By opening dentinal tubules, EDTA allows irrigants (like NaOCl) and intracanal medicaments to penetrate deeper.
5. Aids in Canal Enlargement
Softened dentin allows safer and more controlled shaping of root canals, especially in sclerosed or calcified cases.
